چکیده

Parabolic compound refractive lenses (CRLs) for hard X rays have been used to image the electron beam at undulator and bending-magnet beamlines at the ESRF. The measurements yield the shape and size of the synchrotron radiation source, and show that CRLs with paraboloid surface shape can be used as a beam diagnostics tool at highenergy electron storage rings. The optical resolution of the imaging setup can be as small as 4 mm. This is smaller than typical values of the electron beam size in third-generation synchrotron sources. We report measurements at two ESRF beamlines and resolution calculations taking into account the properties of synchrotron radiation and the transmission characteristics of the CRLs used. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Nanofocusing optics for synchrotron radiation made from polycrystalline diamond.

Diamond possesses many extreme properties that make it an ideal material for fabricating nanofocusing x-ray optics. Refractive lenses made from diamond are able to focus x-ray radiation with high efficiency but without compromising the brilliance of the beam. Electron-beam lithography and deep reactive-ion etching of silicon substrates have been used in a transfer-molding technique to fabricate...

Design and Fabrication of Compound Refractive X-ray Lenses for CHESS

It has long been thought that focusing x-rays with refractive optics was inefficient, if not impossible. Recent developments, however, indicate this is not so. In this paper, we present our work which consisted of designing, building, and testing several compound refractive x-ray lenses for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). We have achieved a gain of 2.5 with one such lens, wh...

A planar parabolic refractive nickel lens for high-energy X-rays

A compound refractive lens made of nickel and designed for focusing high-energy synchrotron X-rays is presented. The lens consists of 600 parabolic grooves and focuses X-rays in one plane only (planar lens). The lenses made and investigated by us earlier exhibited low transmission and irregularities in the focused beam profile. Since then, improvements in lens manufacturing technology have been...

Compound refractive lenses as prefocusing optics for X-ray FEL radiation

The performance of X-ray free-electron laser beamlines may be limited by the angular aperture. Compound refractive lenses (CRLs) can be employed to prefocus the X-ray beam, thereby increasing the beamline transmission. A prefocusing CRL was implemented in the X-ray transport of the Matter under Extreme Conditions Instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source. A significant improvement in the be...

A Monitor of the Focusing Strength of Plasma Lenses using MeV Synchrotron Radiation ?

The focusing strength of plasma lenses used with high energy electron or positron beams can give rise to synchrotron radiation with critical energies in the MeV range. A method is described for measuring the characteristic energy of this radiation as a way of monitoring the strength of the focus. The principle has been implemented in a plasma lens experiment with a 28.5 GeV positron beam.
